We look back on four decades of equestrian
life and the evolution of Horse Illustrated.
1970s: Horse Illustrated Is founded • amerIca celebrates bIcentennIal • apple computer company formed • Gallon of Gas Is 59 cents
1977: Seattle Slew wins Triple Crown.
1978: Affirmed wins Triple Crown.
1978-2014: No one wins Triple Crown.
1978: First Eventing World Cham-
pionship held in the U.S. takes place
in Lexington, Ky., evolving into the
Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.
1987: Rugged Lark makes history
as the first American Quarter Horse
to win the prestigious Superhorse title
for the second time. (The first was in
1985.) The AQHA stallion was well
1990: The first FEI World Equestrian Games is held in Stockholm, Sweden. This international championship
is held every four years in even years
between summer Olympic games.
2000: Barrel racer Martha Josey
enters her fourth decade of successful
competition, chasing cans since the
1960s. Josey was inducted into the
National Cowgirl Museum and Hall
of Fame in 1985.
2002: Reining officially slides into
the international spotlight with its
debut at the World Equestrian Games
in Jerez, Spain.
2003: British eventer Pippa
Funnell becomes the first rider to
win the Grand Slam of Eventing,
requiring consecutive victories at
Rolex, Badminton and Burghley.
2003: The United States Equestrian
Federation is formed, uniting USA
Equestrian (formerly the American
Horse Shows Association) and the
United States Equestrian Team to
serve as the national governing body of
2010: Western dressage becomes a
recognized USEF discipline.
A Sport That Endures
2015: The 60th annual Western
States Trail Ride marks the anniversary of endurance riding as an
organized sport. Endurance was
recognized as an FEI sport in 1978.
Since Horse Illustrated’s beginnings, trends have come and gone, and technology has progressed. Plenty of memorable horses and rid- ers have made their mark on our hearts. The equine industry has evolved and expanded, and advances in horse health have made life ven better for our equine companions. We take a look at some of the highlights of the last 40 years with horses. Thank you for joining us on this ride through our past, and forward into the future.
