Today, the KWPN, Studbook of the Royal Dutch Sport Horse, oversees
breeding and registration of the Dutch Warmblood in the Netherlands. (The
commonly used abbreviation KWPN comes from the Dutch, Koninklijk Warmb-loed Paardenstamboek Nederland.) Chapters around the world follow its lead for
promoting the breed in their own countries.
Three Breed Standards
Dutch Warmbloods are categorized into three different breeding directions in
the Netherlands: riding (further divided into dressage and jumping), harness and
gelders horses. The gelders horse is a more traditional, all-around type with heavier bone. Each classification has its own standards, but all horses are expected to
meet general guidelines for conformation, performance and character.
