Dujardin won her second individual Olympic gold with Valegro
in what may have been the gelding’s final international competitive
appearance. Werth took silver and
Kristina Bröring-Sprehe, also of Germany, won the bronze with Desperados FRH.
Left: Fifty-eight-year-old Nick Skelton
took the first individual gold of his long
career aboard the stallion Big Star. Skelton
endured a broken neck in 2000 and hip
replacement in 2011, but recovered in time
to win team gold for Great Britain in 2012.
Regarding potential retirement, Skelton
said, “I only ride Big Star at the moment.
When he stops, I will stop.”
Top: Laura Graves (USA) and her
longtime partner, Verdades, made
their Olympic debut in Rio. They capped
the week with a spectacular freestyle
test that scored just over 85% to finish
in fourth place individually, narrowly
missing the podium.
