showing him how to find a way to use
only the muscles he needed in order to
do the job he was being asked to do.
If we could do this, we not only could
eliminate a lot of his unnecessary tension, both internally and externally, but
chances were really good we might even
tap into the qualities in him that allow
all horses to share the best of who they
are with the best of who we are.

FINDING THE MISSED PATH
The Art of Restarting Horses

Using our scale from 0 to 10 with 0
as no pressure and 10 way more than we
ever want to use, I usually applied about
a 0.5 with the reins when I asked Dash to
stop. He would usually stop with only that
much pressure, or perhaps a bit more, but
he was also locking his jaw, neck, and poll
at the same time. Without increasing the
pressure, I would hold my position until he
would release to himself. Here, you can see
him breaking at the poll in his stop while
bracing at the same time. You can also see
that his mind is still traveling for ward by
the direction his eye is facing.
