It probably makes sense that a pasture ornament has different nutritional needs than a racehorse. But what exactly changes as your horse’s level of exercise increases? First things first: You need
to determine what level of work your
horse is doing (see “Work Level,” pg. 25).
The “moderate” and “heavy” categories qualify as performance horses
in terms of nutritional needs, but
since few amateur riders have horses
in truly heavy work, we will focus on
horses in moderate work.
