“Philanthropy is a defining element of the Donna B
brand, my artistic identity, and a personal lifestyle
commitment,” explains artist Donna Bernstein.
Her art supports a variety of horse-related
charities, including Old Friends Thoroughbred
Retirement Facility, a farm in Georgetown, Ky., that
houses retired racehorses. Each year, Bernstein
“paints live” at the Ferdinand’s Ball event in
Louisville two days prior to the Kentucky Derby,
which raises funds for the Old Friends organization.
In 2014, she even collaborated with a former
racehorse, Metro Meteor, to create four paintings
and raise awareness of the needs of retired horses.
After Metro finished painting with a brush in
his mouth, Bernstein connected his colorful paint
strokes with her own lines until images of horses
appeared on canvas. A video clip featuring their
collaboration can be found on her website.
“As an artist of horses, the least I can do is give
back to the animals that provide me my career and
profession—and whom I love dearly,” she adds.
