Markcrow combines equestrian
style with real-world function.
Lifelong equestrian Daphne Mark- crow needed something that could carry almost as much as a tack trunk and didn’t require a two-person lift. With nothing out in the market that was just right, she designed a bag version of that elusive carrier and Oughton Limited and the Tacktrunk
Bag were born. “I absolutely loved how it worked,” she
says. “I could go to a one-day show or to a trainer’s farm
and have everything I needed.” Made of waxed canvas
trimmed with halter leather, the bag was an instant hit
among her friends. “My friends all wanted one, and I soon
found myself trying to get 10, then 20 made,” she explains. Markcrow uses them to pack for all her family
trips and loves how they gain character with use
and age—an indicator of their high quality. Oughton products are made at the same factories
resourced by the world’s top luxury brands.
Markcrow’s firsthand experience of balancing her equestrian lifestyle (she has a 9-year-
old Hanoverian gelding named Fuerst Apollo LL
that she shows in the adult amateur hunters) with
the rest of her schedule helps her design products
for both equestrians and non-equestrians who simply
appreciate good style. “My muse is a woman who
juggles work, horses and kids,” she says. To aspiring
equestrian entrepreneurs, Markcrow explains that
it’s best if you have an idea that can extend beyond
the horse world, or at least into all the disciplines.
For Mackrow, it’s her strong aesthetic point of view.
“The only true style is personal style,” she says. “It is
my hope that Oughton—with its nod to the luxury
of the equestrian world—helps people define their
personal style [for themselves].”
