To perform the move, you give
precise and continuous cues to gain
control of the horse’s shoulders,
ribcage and hip. Leg-yielding is one
of the most basic skills you can teach
your horse, and it’s the gateway to

/ Know Your Cues /
In my clinics, I first teach riders how
to use their seat in three different
ways: following, driving and resisting
the horse’s motion. You use your
natural aids (seat, legs and hands) in
rhythm with the horse’s stride.
Before asking for the leg-yield, you
need to be able to drive your horse
forward with your seat and legs and
follow his motion, while sitting balanced and centered.
When you ask the horse to leg-yield,
your hands control the horse from the
withers forward, and your seat, legs
and hands control the horse’s body
from withers to tail. You’ll use all your
aids to cue the horse into a leg-yield,
and then adjust your hands and legs
accordingly, depending on how the
horse responds and moves.
Most of the cues to leg-yield will
come from your seat and legs, but
you’ll also use your hands to help set
the bend (the horse is bent away from
the direction of travel). You will also
use the indirect rein aids to isolate the
movement of the shoulders and hips.
